Are Sandals Resorts Couples Only? Here's What You Need to Know

Sandals Dunn's River

Sandals Dunn's River

If you've been searching "is Sandals Resort couples only," here's your quick answer: yes and no. Sandals is absolutely designed, built, and marketed for couples — and the overwhelming majority of what you'll see there are two people in love. But "couples only" as a strict policy? There's a bit more nuance than that, and I want to give you the full picture before you book.

I'm Matt Brandenburg, a Sandals travel specialist at Coastal Compass. My wife and I spent our 10th anniversary at a Sandals and it set the bar for our vacation experience. Since then, I've been to all the Sandals Resorts, and I've helped many guests — couples, adult families, group trips, and everyone in between — plan their stays. Let me break this down for you.

Quick Answer

Sandals is an adults-only (18+) resort brand specifically designed for couples. The entire atmosphere set is built around romance and togetherness. The vast majority of guests you'll meet are couples — honeymooners, anniversary travelers, or pairs who just need a getaway.

That said, Sandals does not technically require you to be a romantic couple. Groups of couples travel together, adult families visit, and large group trips have all made it work. What Sandals does require — without exception — is that all guests be 18 or older.

If you want to bring children, that's what Beaches Resorts (Sandals' sister brand) is built for.

Yes, Sandals Is Designed for Couples — Here's How You Can Tell

Walk into any Sandals resort and you’ll quickly understand the vibe. There are plunge pools for two. The candlelit restaurant tables set with flowers. One of the first things I notice is the photographers doing couples photo shoots in the evening. Everything here is engineered around the experience of two people.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

The rooms are built for two. Every category centers a king bed. Many rooms include a private plunge pool, swim-up terrace, or direct beach access. Butler Suites go further — your own dedicated butler team to handle everything from restaurant reservations to unpacking your bags to setting up a private beachside dinner. (When I traveled with my videographer, we quickly discovered there were no split bed options.)

Romance is a core product, not an add-on. Sandals runs one of the most known destination wedding operations in the Caribbean. Their Sweetheart wedding package is complimentary for couples staying 7+ nights in club or butler room categories — a real, legally binding ceremony on the beach, included. They also handle honeymoon packages with turndown service, sparkling wine, flower petals on the bed, and breakfast in bed. Anniversary packages, vow renewals — it's all there.

The Red Lane Spa at each property offers couples massage treatments, side-by-side relaxation experiences, and wellness rituals that are clearly designed for two. You don't have to go together, but the setup is definitely for it. They even offer couples massages in private locations on the beach (see above).

Even the activities feel romantic.  While many other water sports are included, you’ll find the Hobie Cat sailboats are a staple on the beach. One of the most relaxing moments I’ve had with my wife is spending an our on these drifting in the bay.

But Couples Aren't the Only Ones You'll See There

Given all of that, you might be surprised by who else ends up at Sandals.

Groups of Couples

This is actually pretty common, and I see it all the time. Two or three couples from the same friend group — each couple in their own room — traveling together to the same property. They share beach days, join group dinners, maybe take a scuba excursion together, then retreat to their own private space at night. For them, it works great. Some groups use the Stay & Play program to island-hop between Sandals properties, making a week-long trip out of it.

Families with Adult Children

This surprised me, but it's more common than you'd think. A husband and wife book one room; their two adult kids (18+) book another at the same resort. Technically everyone is an adult, so it clears the policy. I've recently met a couple who brought their adult daughter and her best friend. It's an unconventional use of a couples resort, but it works.

Large Groups

Less common, but it happens — especially for destination weddings where the wedding party stays on property, bachelorette trips where everyone pairs up to share rooms, and milestone birthday groups. I've seen groups of college friends all book together and have a great time. I'll be honest with you though: if you're primarily looking for nightlife, group party energy, or a DJ-at-the-pool vibe, Sandals probably isn't the best fit. The atmosphere is romantic and low-key by design. That's a feature for couples, and a mismatch for groups wanting something louder.

That said, the larger groups will typically stay at the larger resorts. Think Sandals Ochi, Sandals South Coast, etc. While it’s rare, we did spot a group of college spring breakers at Sandals South Coast.

Who Can't Stay at Sandals?

Children. This is the hard line. Sandals enforces an 18+ policy across every property. If you're traveling with kids and want the same all-inclusive quality, Beaches Resorts is their sister brand — same luxury standard, built for families.

Solo travelers can technically book a room, but you'll pay a single supplement (essentially the full room rate rather than splitting it). Sandals doesn't market to or design for solo guests, and you'd feel the difference. It's not unwelcoming — it just wasn't built with solo travel in mind.

The Bottom Line

Sandals was built for couples. It's been built for couples since Gordon "Butch" Stewart opened the first property in Montego Bay in 1981. The rooms, the restaurants, the spa, the free weddings, the butler service, the scuba at sunset — it all points in one direction. A special experience for two people.

The 18+ policy is the real requirement. Everything else — whether you're a honeymooning couple, an adult family, or a group of friends who pair up to share rooms — can work within that.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sandals

  • No — Sandals is adults-only (18+), but not limited exclusively to romantic couples. The brand is designed for and marketed to couples, and that's the vast majority of guests. However, adult families, groups of couples, and friend groups who pair up in rooms can and do stay at Sandals properties.

  • All guests must be 18 years of age or older. There are no exceptions to this policy. If you want to bring children on a Caribbean all-inclusive vacation, Sandals' sister brand Beaches Resorts is designed for guests of all ages.

  • Technically yes, but you'll pay a single supplement rather than splitting the room rate with a partner. Sandals doesn't market to solo travelers and the resort experience is very much oriented around pairs.

  • Not at all. Sandals welcomes all couples — married, engaged, in a long-term relationship, or celebrating any milestone together. The brand doesn't verify relationship status at check-in.

  • Yes. Sandals Resorts welcomes same-sex couples at all properties, and same-sex wedding ceremonies can be performed at select locations.

  • Sandals is adults-only (18+) and designed primarily for couples. Beaches is the family-oriented sister brand that welcomes guests of all ages, including children. If you have kids, Beaches is your answer. If you want an adults-only, couples-focused escape, Sandals was built for you.
