First Impressions and Location in Ocho Rios
Both resorts are in Ocho Rios, minutes apart, but the feel is immediately different once you set foot on each property. Royal Plantation is quiet, classic, and feels a bit like you’ve found Jamaica’s best-kept secret. Ochi is massive and full of energy, with people coming and going, music playing, and always something happening.
You have the option to fly into Ochos Rios or Montego Bay. While some opt to fly into the newer airport in Ochos Rios due to proximity, I’ve found that the flights here are less frequent. If your flight gets cancelled, it may be more difficult to get in on the same day.
In comparison, Montego Bay’s airport is a 90-minute drive away. However, you’ll also find many flight options, with some in the morning. Plus, transportation is included with Sandals!
Let’s walk through each one so you can get a real sense for which matches your travel style.
Sandals Royal Plantation: Laid-Back Luxury
If you ever dreamed of a low-key getaway where everything is done for you, this is it. Royal Plantation is small—just 74 suites—and every single guest here gets butler service included. That’s right, everyone gets a butler. There are no standard rooms at this resort. I feel like it’s the Sandals version of a small boutique resort (and it’s honestly become one of my favorites).
Who Sandals Royal Plantation is Best For
Royal Plantation is built for couples who want maximum relaxation. Think: personalized service, no crowds, and quiet beach time. If you’d rather listen to the sound of the ocean than a DJ, and you’re ready to leave all the decisions to someone else (except maybe “red or white wine tonight?”), this is probably your spot.
Honeymooners, people celebrating an anniversary, or anyone who wants to unwind after a busy stretch at work will find Royal Plantation incredibly appealing. When I say you can unplug, I really mean it—your biggest task might just be deciding which lounge chair to claim for the afternoon. And the staff gets to know you quickly. By my second day, they remembered my coffee order and my favorite seat at the beach.
Suites & Service
Every suite is oceanfront, so there’s no “best room” search to stress over, although some will be larger. The butlers here take care of things like dinner reservations, beach setup—including stocking your cooler with your preferred drinks—and even unpacking or repacking your suitcase if you want. I loved being able to walk down to the beach and have my favorite snacks and drinks appear, no fuss.
The resort itself feels classic—think old-school Caribbean with a modern touch. I will say that some of the rooms might feel dated in comparison to the much newer resorts. However, they were getting refreshed when I last visited in 2025.
If you like attention to detail and extra care, you’ll appreciate the staff here. And since it’s small, things are quiet and easy to navigate. You won’t get lost trying to find dinner, and you probably won’t have to wait for service.
Food & Dining
Royal Plantation has five restaurants, and honestly, the food here is excellent. Most meals are à la carte—not buffet—and it fits the overall mood: relaxed, no rush, and well-prepared. I enjoyed breakfast out on the terrace that overlooks the ocean, a seafood lunch down on the beach, and dinner at the French restaurant, all without feeling crowded or rushed.
A really nice perk: You also get full access to Sandals Ochi’s restaurants (more on that below). A quick shuttle takes you next door, where you’ll find even more variety—16 restaurants in all—before heading back to your peaceful suite at Royal Plantation. This combination gives you the best of both worlds: calm at home base, but plenty of options for when you want to mix it up.

Amenities & Activities
If your ideal vacation is all about quiet mornings, swimming in the sea, and maybe a spa afternoon, Royal Plantation fits the bill. There are two private cove beaches, which are never overly busy. Beach butlers deliver drinks, snacks, or even lunch right to your lounger.
For activities, you’ll find a fitness center, spa, and some water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding. There’s not a wild activities schedule—just a focus on comfort and relaxation. The quiet, adults-only environment is very much part of the appeal. In my opinion, outside of the pub, there’s not much of a night life. If you’re happy skipping the party scene, you’ll feel right at home. I will add that you have the option to enjoy the nightlife next door at Sandals Ochi, which made it the perfect blend for my last visit.
Sandals Ochi: Energy, Nightlife, and Variety
If Royal Plantation is about winding down, Sandals Ochi is the place to turn up the fun. It’s easily the biggest Sandals resort I’ve seen, and it feels like they took two resorts and combined it into one massive property. There are over 500 rooms and villas, and the whole place is split into two parts: the hillside (sometimes called the Great House and Butler Village) and the beachside (Riviera Seaside). A small shuttle called "The Hop" runs guests between these two sides all day.
Who Sandals Ochi Is Best For
Sandals Ochi attracts all kinds of couples, especially those who like having plenty to do and meeting new people. If you want a resort with pool parties, live shows, big choice in restaurants, and new friends at the swim-up bar, you’ll be right at home.
If you want lots of beach space, this may not be the best resort. However, they do have 3 sections of beach, with one being more secluded.
Where You’ll Stay
Because Ochi is so big, figuring out which section you want can be its own adventure. Here’s the breakdown:
Hillside/Great House & Butler Village: Located farther from the beach, surrounded by gardens, and much quieter—sort of a resort-within-a-resort. Many of the villas here are private or semi-private and feel separate from the energetic center. If you want the best of both worlds, this area delivers quiet at night with the flexibility to join the fun when you’re ready. Many suites here include butler service.
Beachside/Riviera Seaside: Closer to all the action. Steps away from the big pool, restaurants, and the beach club. There’s liveliness day and night here, and it’s perfect if you don’t want to miss a thing.
Not every room comes with a butler; at Ochi, you choose from Luxury, Club Level, or Butler Elite. Club Level adds a few perks but isn’t as personalized as Royal Plantation’s all-butler setup. Entry-level rooms are often among the best value in the Sandals lineup. I also found that you can land a unique club level room here for cheaper than other resorts.
Food & Dining
Here’s where Ochi really shines—16 restaurants, each with its own vibe and menu. You can have sushi one night, Southern cuisine the next, and maybe Italian after that. I never waited long for a table, and there’s a lot to try. The food isn’t always fancy, but there’s always something new.
Worth calling out: the Rabbit Hole Speakeasy. It’s hidden, you need a password to get in, and once you do, the bartenders mix up some of the best cocktails I’ve had at any Sandals. The whole 1920s vibe makes for a fun night out with a side of mystery. It’s one of those unique touches you’ll tell friends about when you get home.

Activities & Nightlife
Sandals Ochi is built for guests who want lots of options, day or night. The Beach Club is the main hangout—there’s a pool, a swim-up bar, plenty of music, and a friendly crowd. I met couples from all over, and the energy rarely drops.
In the evenings, the amphitheater hosts live shows about five nights a week—anything from reggae bands to game nights. It’s the biggest I’ve seen at a Sandals. Plus, there are piano bars, quiet nooks, and parties that run late. If you prefer quieter hangouts, the Butler Village and some garden sections are tucked away from the buzz.
Golfers get free green fees at the Sandals course nearby, and water sports—like snorkeling and scuba—are included. It’s honestly hard to get bored here with all of the options.
