Sandals Dunns River Review: How it Set the Bar
If someone had told me that my first Sandals experience would make every vacation after it feel like it needed to measure up, I would have said they were being dramatic. They weren't. Sandals Dunns River in Ocho Rios, Jamaica isn't just a great resort — it's the reason I became obsessed with Sandals in the first place.
We visited Sandals Dunn’s River for our 10th wedding anniversary, shortly after it opened. It’s come to be known as “Sandals 2.0,” as they have both refined and added to their offerings. In addition to new features, this resort is known for it’s perfect combination of having a decent beach size, medium number of restaurants and bars, and being located near Ochos Rios, where most of the premiere excursions are located.
I want to give you an honest, first-hand look at what to expect: what I loved, what surprised me, and a couple things I wish I'd known before we went.
Quick Answer
Is Sandals Dunn's River worth it? Yes — especially if this is your first Sandals. It's one of the newer properties in Jamaica, which means updated rooms, a genuinely strong dining program, and a resort that hasn't had time to get tired. The Mammee Bay building has the best ocean views on property, the Rum Club is a legitimately great bar, and the namesake excursion to Dunn's River Falls is something you should absolutely book.

My Experience at Sandals Dunn's River
This was our first Sandals resort — and looking back, I couldn't have chosen a better starting point. I didn't know exactly what to expect from the all-inclusive luxury format, and Dunn's River answered every question before I could ask it.
We stayed in the Mammee Bay building, and I genuinely believe it offers the best ocean views on the entire property. What surprised me most was how small the resort felt — in the best way. This isn't a massive, sprawling complex where you spend the first day getting lost trying to find your restaurant. The layout makes everything feel intentional and personal. By day two, we already felt like regulars.
What I Loved:
The Mammee Bay building views are genuinely unmatched
12 restaurants means real variety without ever leaving the resort
The Rum Club is one of the best bars I've been to, at a Sandals or anywhere
Newer property — everything feels fresh and well-maintained
20 minutes from Ian Fleming International makes travel day painless
Compact, intimate layout — easy to get comfortable fast
Dunn's River Falls is right there
Who Sandals Dunn's River Is (and Isn't) Right For
This resort is a great fit if you:
Are doing your first Sandals and want a strong first impression
Want a smaller feel without a massive resort crowd
Care about dining variety and want real options every night
Want easy access to one of Jamaica's most iconic excursions
You might prefer a different property if:
You want the largest pool selection in Jamaica — Sandals South Coast has more going on in that department
You're after a fully butler-focused experience — Sandals Royal Plantation might be a better fit at the top end

Arrival
One of the finer things about Sandals Resorts is that “all-inclusive” really does mean all-inclusive, starting with your transportation and arrival. All Sandals Resorts include bus or private car transport from the airport. Sandals Dunn’s River is located about 90 minutes from the airport in Montego Bay.
Quick Note: If you want to zip through customs and make it to the bus sooner, we recommend checking out Club Mobay at the Montego Bay airport. The packages costs are more than reasonable. Once my plane lands, the last thing I want to do is wait in lines. Club Mobay will assign you a personal escort to skip the customs line, grab your bags, and complimentary cocktails why you wait for the bus.
For more information on Club Mobay, check out our review: What is Club Mobay and is it Worth It?
If you opt not to use this package, Sandals has a nice lounge for you to wait for the bus as well! We found that they keep the buses going around the clock, so we only had to wait about 15 minutes.
When our bus pulled up to the open-air lobby, they had a team playing music, handing out hot towels and taking our bags. Luxury level accommodations will proceed to check in here. Club level accommodations will be led to the concierge lounge for a personalized check-in and tour.
Room Accommodations
Guests can choose from a range of accommodations across four distinct areas: Mammee Bay, Travertine, Tufa, and the signature Rondovals. Each offer an array of unique experiences, from luxury to butler-tier rooms, ensuring there's a perfect fit for every taste and budget. Click below for a full list of every room accommodation available at the resort. Below that, you’ll find an overview of rooms in each building, along with tour videos.
Sandals Dunn’s River - Room Categories
Mammee Bay Building
I keep coming back to Mammee Bay because I genuinely think the ocean views from this building are the best on property. When you're booking, make a specific request to be placed here. The morning view of the Caribbean Sea from the balcony — cup of Blue Mountain coffee in hand — was one of those moments I'll remember for a long time.
We chose to stay in the Mammee Bay in an ocean front room with a balcony soaker tub. It was the perfect experience for our budget! Check out the video below for a tour of the room.
Travertine Building
The Travertine is the main building that houses the front lobby. Rooms are found above the first floor at varying levels of accommodations. While the rooms we saw we more spacious than Mammee Bay, we actually preferred the Mammee Bay building, as it was closer to the ocean. Still, all the rooms at Sandals Dunn’s River are luxurious. You’ll have your pick between beachfront rooms on one side and views of the rondovals and scenery on the other.
Pro Tip: If you stay on the ocean facing side, make sure you put in a request to stay more towards the pools. The other end doesn’t have a great view, as you’re looking out over a rooftop section.
Below, you can find our video tour of an Beachfront Club Level Room with a Balcony Soaker Tub.
Tufa Terrace Buildings
While the Rondovals are the most expensive and luxurious accommodations at this resort, our personal favorite were the Tufa 1 and Tufa 2 buildings. These are both located behind the east pool. On floors 2-4, all rooms will have a sky pool on the balcony (pictured above). Each room on the bottom floor will have a swim out pool. The swim out pools are all connected by a river, but a large amount of your personal swimming area is walled off from your neighbors. The room layouts are largely the same between both buildings. However, all rooms in Tufa 1 will have different couches than Tufa 2.
We preferred the swim over everything else, as they were the perfect pool/beach combination. I prefer to spend most of my time on the beach, but my wife will want to have some private time by the pool. This gives us the best of both worlds. I personally loved how we could read by our personal pool without having to find seats. Below you’ll find a tour video of one of the Tufa Terrace Swim Up rooms.
Coyoba Rondovals
I'll be straight with you: the Rondovals are nicer. They're round-structure villas with rooftop terraces, and Sandals offers a Celestial Butler Package here that includes rooftop picnics, a telescope, and constellation guidance. If that doesn't sound like a honeymoon experience, I don't know what does.
The Rondoval Villas are a splurge, but if it's in the budget — especially for a honeymoon or anniversary — go for it.
Restaurants and Bars
Sandals Dunn’s River hosts 12 on-site restaurants. If you’re staying a full week, this gives you the perfect chance to sample everything at least once. Below, we’ll review each restaurant and provide a link to the menu.
Quick Note on Dress Code: At Dunn’s River, there are only two levels of dress code that you’ll find at the restaurants. Only one restaurant (L’amande) requires resort evening attire. When packing for your trip, you may want to take a look at the dress code for each spot you plan to dine at. Here are the differences in dress code below, taken from the Sandals website:
Resort Evening Attire - Dress pants or jeans for men. Long or short sleeve dress shirts (with or without collar). Dress shoes or sandals. No shorts, t-shirts, sleeveless shirts, sneakers, flip flops or slippers. No hats.
Resort Casual - Shorts or jeans. T-shirts or polo shirts. Swimwear must be covered. Shirts and footwear required.
Saltaire
Type of Cuisine: Caribbean
Breakfast (Buffet): 7:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Lunch (Buffet): 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Saltaire is the buffet at Sandals Dunn’s River. We loved the breakfast buffet so much, we skipped the coffee shop and came here almost every morning. You’ll find most breakfast buffet staples in the morning, along with fresh orange juice and a smoothie bar. For lunch, the cuisine rotates each day. The food is all self-serve, but you’ll have waitstaff bringing around drinks and silverware.
L’mande
Type of Cuisine: Classic French
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Evening (Reservations required)
L’amande was in our top 3 for restaurants. This is the only restaurant with a resort evening dress code, as well as the only restaurant that requires a reservation. If you want to dine here, be sure to book your reservation the first day you arrive. While we didn’t have a problem obtaining a booking, you’ll want to make sure you come here.
I’m personally not as adventurous, but I did love the onion soup and the beef medallions. My wife raved about the fish for the next several days.
Banyu
Type of Cuisine: Asian
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Banyu was the only restaurant we chose to visit twice for dinner during our stay. The menu has so many different choices, from traditional Asian food to more adventurous. If you go, try the Banana Spring Roll for dessert. It surprised me with how tasty it was.
Edessa
Type of Cuisine: Greek
Breakfast (a la Carte): 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
I’m going to be honest with you. Edessa was the tastiest restaurant that we found at the resort. Even on a day when I’m not terribly hungry, I may still clear the plate on some of these dishes. We went once for dinner and once for breakfast. Here are my recommendations for the best food to sample:
Breakfast - Avocado Toast and Crunchy Coconut French Toast
Dinner - Baked Feta Cheese
Cascata
Type of Cuisine: Italian
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
From what we experienced, Cascata seemed to be the most popular restaurant at the resort. It filled up quickly every night, but we were still able to get in without a long wait. That said, you may want to come a little earlier on an evening you choose to dine here. At Cascata, you’ll find most of the typical items you’d find on an Italian menu.
Zuka
Type of Cuisine: Latin Fusion
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Zuka was probably my least favorite of the restaurants at Dunn’s River, but take that with a huge grain of salt. I’m not an adventurous eater and prefer more traditional foods. However, it was a ton of fun to step out and try a few items that were culturally different. They did have a few items for picky eaters on the menu, like the quesadillas.
Hanami
Type of Cuisine: Sushi
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Hanami is the sushi restaurant at Sandals Dunn’s River. You’ll find an array of different types of sushi to sample. There are also a few other things on the menu to sample if you want to stray away from sushi for the night.
Isola Pizzeria
Type of Cuisine: Pizzeria
Lunch (a la Carte): 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Three words: Jerk Chicken Pizza. This dish may have been our collective favorite at the resort. We came back for lunch most days. Additionally, there’s nothing like spending lunch on the beach with margaritas being brought to you as you peruse the menu.
Galene Seaside Grill
Type of Cuisine: Seaside Grill
Lunch (a la Carte): 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Galene Seaside Grill is directly next to the pizzeria by the beach. Here you’ll find more traditional American-style fare: quesadillas, chili dogs, salad, burgers. There’s one thing that they’ll cook up that’s not on the menu though - the Jamaican Patty. This is a staple food in Jamaica and you can’t visit without trying one.
Jerk Shack
Type of Cuisine: Authentic Jamaican Jerk Specialties
Lunch (a la Carte): 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Dinner (a la Carte): 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
We waited until the day before leaving to try the Jerk Shack for lunch. I still count that as one of the mistakes on our visit. The Jerk Shack is a bit more secluded, found off on the west end of the resort. However, the seating area has an incredible view of the ocean. We found the Jerk Chicken and Festival to be the perfect combination for a laid back lunch by the ocean.
Blum
Type of Cuisine: Jamaican Coffee Shop
Open: 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Blum is a newer concept among the Sandals Resorts banner. It’s been included on newer properties as a part of Sandals 2.0. The coffee shop is located towards the front of the resort, near the Rondovals, so it’s a short walk from the other buildings in the morning. For this reason, we opted to do the buffet most mornings, but did enjoy the coffee as a pick me up in the late afternoons. Quick tip here: You have to try the Jamaican. It’s a combination of espresso shots and Jamaican run cream. That was a favorite of mine all week.
Dunn’s Rum Club
Type of Cuisine: Rum Bar
Late Night Dining: 4:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
Dress code: Resort Casual
Dunn’s Rum Club was the one venue we ended up in every single evening. Most Sandals Resorts in Jamaica primarily use rum from the renowned Appleton Estate. Dunn’s Rum Club has an array of choices to sample, as well as a large selection of cocktails. In addition to drinks, they also have a small snack menu.
The primary feature that stood out for us was the room with the pool tables. They have two pool tables and a bartender who will continue to bring you your drinks of choice in this add-on room. The Rum Club was surprisingly not busy most nights, so we got in our fair share of pool.
Bars
The resort also features 9 bars hosted throughout different sections. You’ll find bars in the hotel lobby, main plaza, in the Mammee Bay building, by the beach, a swim-up bar in the west pool, and a rooftop bar in one of the Tufa buildings.
Quick Tip: Though not explicitly stated, there are some drinks at the bars you will need to try at Sandals Dunn’s River. The Dirty Banana was an addiction I couldn’t shake after trying it on day one. Also, there’s a specific bartender who’s made a name for himself at the swim up bar making what he calls the “Hochie Koochie”. It’s a shot that tastes like ice-cream, looks like a Bob Marley cocktail, and is perfect in the afternoon!
Activities and Entertainment
This is part of the initial allure of Sandals that sparked our interest. We mentioned earlier that Sandals Resorts takes “all-inclusive” to a whole new level. Most all-inclusive resorts typically include food and alcohol. Sandals includes so more more. We’ll cover everything below that’s included in the price of your stay, including the beach, water sports, land sports, and entertainment.
Beach, Pools, and Water Sports
Let’s start with the beach. We found that there was plenty of space to snag a pair of chairs near the water each day. (You may have to come out early if you don’t have a butler and want the front row though). There’s a nice pocket of the ocean that’s sectioned off for swimming and drifting around on the circular floats. One of my personal favorite things was the staff walked around the beach offering the drink of the day.
Here’s a list of all watersports included at Sandals Dunn’s River:
Hobie Cats
Kayaking
Knee boarding
Snorkeling
Wakeboarding
Paddleboards
Waterskiing
Scuba Diving
Quick Note: All of the above are included in the resort cost, but may not all be out for use all of the time. Additionally, you will have to prove certification to go Scuba Diving. If you are not certified, they can provide a class in the pool for an additional fee.
My personal favorite water sport was sailing on the Hobie Kats. They give free lessons, they let you take it out when you get the hang of it!
Land Activities
The land sports at Sandals Dunn’s River were a little harder to find. We did see the volleyball net up at one point, but no one was playing. Most of the guests there seemed more content to lounge at the beach with drinks or take part in off-site excursions. While the guide lists several activities available on land, we only saw volleyball, pool and the fitness center during our stay.
Here’s the list of land activites provided in the Sandals Dunn’s River guide:
Volleyball
Bocce Ball
Cricket
Board Games
Pool
Table Tennis
Shuffle Board
Croquet
Chess Board
Fitness Center
In additional to the on-side land activities mentioned above, Sandals Dunn’s River is also located near Upton Estate Golf & Country Club. Green fees and Transfers are included, but clubs and shoes can be rented for an additional charge.
More Information on Upton Estate Here
Night Life and Entertainment
Sandals Dunn’s River hasn’t yet made a name for it’s nightlife, but they did provide something to do every single night. Our favorite was the Silent Disco, in which you receive headphones and can pick between two different DJs. They also had piano sing alongs near the main lobby and shows out on the beach.
During the morning, you’ll typically hear someone playing saxophone or violin to a track near the eastern pool. Around noon, the DJ takes his place at the booth near the beach and pumps out tracks for the afternoon. In the evening, you’ll find shows on the beach near the main beach bar.
Here’s a list of themed nights and weekly events from the Sandals Dunn’s River guide:
THEME NIGHTS & WEEKLY EVENTS:
Sundays - Love is all you need “Movie Night - Main Beach”
Mondays - Est. 1981 “Live Band with Vocalist”
Tuesdays - Hard Drive Band Live Retro Vibe - Main Beach
Wednesdays - Circus Live - Main Beach
Thursdays - Silent Headphone Party
Fridays - Beach Party “Steel Pan Orchestra”
Saturdays - Sandals Live “Icon Band”
WEEKLY EVENTS:
Managers’ Welcome – Meet & Greet
Sandals Select Cocktail Reception & Dinner
Club Sandals Guests Cocktail Reception
Red Lane Spa
The Red Lane Spa is located on premises and open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm daily. Here, you’ll find a number of treatments: massages, facial treatments, body treatments and more. Please keep in mind that, while Sandals is a “no-tipping” and “all-inclusive” resort, the spa doesn’t follow these guidelines. All treatments will be an additional cost and tipping is recommended.
Click Here for a List of Spa Services
You have the choice to have your massage in the privacy of a room at the spa or out on the end of the pier near the Aqua Center. We opted for the hour-long couples massage on our first full day at the resort. We also went for the spa room, as the pier seemed to be much less private. I will note that getting a massage earlier in your stay is a good idea, as it gets you relaxed for the vacation.
Wedding Options
Sandals is known for their wedding packages. During our stay at Dunn’s River, we saw 3-4 weddings within one week! Looking back, I’m a little jealous we didn’t plan a destination wedding ourselves.
Sandals has several wedding packages offered. They have an on-premises wedding office, where you’ll pick your spot and make more plans upon arrival. See below for more information on available Sandals wedding packages. Below that, we’ve put together a video showcasing the four options you can choose for your wedding ceremony, if you choose to get married at Sandals Dunn’s River.
Sandals Dunn's River vs Other Sandals in Jamaica
If you're deciding between this property and others in Jamaica, here's my honest read:
vs. Sandals Ochi — Ochi is larger and more energetic. Dunn's River is newer and more boutique. If you want a quieter, more intimate vibe, Dunn's River wins.
vs. Sandals Royal Plantation — Royal Plantation is an all-butler small property at a very different price point. If you want full butler service from the moment you arrive, that's the move.
vs. Sandals South Coast — South Coast has an overwater bungalow program and a longer beach. Dunn's River has the stronger dining and the excursion advantage.
Final Verdict: Is Sandals Dunn's River Worth It?
Yes. Without hesitation. Especially if this is your first Sandals.
The combination of a newer property, a 12-restaurant dining program, one of the best bars I've found at an all-inclusive, and 20-minute access to Dunn's River Falls makes this an easy recommendation. The Mammee Bay building views, the Tufa Swim-Ups, the Rum Club, the baked cheese at Edessa that I still think about — this trip stays with you.
It was our first Sandals and it genuinely set the bar. Every resort we've visited since has been measured against it, and Dunn's River holds up.
FAQs About Sandals Dunn's River
-
Yes — like all Sandals properties, it's couples-only and 18+. There are no children at this resort.es here
-
Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) in Boscobel is closest at about 20 minutes away. Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay is about 90 minutes and serves more major carriers. Both include complimentary round-trip Sandals transfers.
-
The resort has two on-property river pools inspired by the falls, but the actual Dunn's River Falls excursion is an additional cost bookable through Sandals' excursion program. Very much worth adding to your trip budget.
-
For best views, request the Mammee Bay building specifically. For the best all-around experience at a moderate upgrade, the Tufa Swim-Up Suites are my recommendation. If budget isn't a constraint, the Coyaba Sky Rondoval Villas are the nicest rooms on property.
-
Absolutely. The Rondoval Villas with the Celestial Butler Package — rooftop picnics, telescope, constellation guidance — were practically designed for honeymoons. The boutique size of the resort also makes it feel more intimate and personal than the larger Jamaica properties.
