Best Time to Visit Jamaica

Calendar

Jamaica, like many Caribbean islands, is a year-round destination, but choosing the right time depends on your preferences.

  • Dry Season (December – April): The best weather, but also the busiest and most expensive time to visit. Ideal for beach lovers and festival-goers. This is peak travel season for Jamaica.

  • Wet Season (May – November): Lower prices and fewer crowds. Expect short tropical showers and possible hurricanes from August to October.

  • Festival Highlights: Visit during Reggae Sumfest (July) for a special music experience or Jamaica Carnival (April) for colorful street parades.

Pro Tip: For fewer crowds and great weather, book in late April or early December.

Getting to Jamaica: Airports and Entry Requirements

Couple at Airport

Jamaica has 3 major international airports you can fly into. Each dispersed in different locations across the island, making them ideal for visiting different resorts.

Major International Airports

Sangster International Airport (MBJ) – Montego Bay (Best for resorts in Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios)

Sangster International is hands down my favorite Jamaican airport. Every time we visit, this is our airport of choice. It's right in Montego Bay and only about an hour and a half from some of the other major areas of Jamaica. Additionally, you'll see more airlines and flights to this airport, and we've always felt safe. (Plus, Club Mobay at this airport is an amazing additional to your trip!)

Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) – Kingston (Ideal for exploring Kingston and the Blue Mountains)

Normal Manley International is located towards the southeast corner of the island. Truthfully, we've never flown into this airport, as most of the locations we visit are closer to the other airports. I've also heard that Kingston may be a bit rougher. I'm personally comfortable with it, but most of my clients opt for Montego Bay.

Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) – Ocho Rios (Limited international flights, close to Ocho Rios resorts)

Ian Fleming is the newest of the three airports, having opened in the last few years. It's an ideal spot to fly into if you're planning a stay in Ochos Rios. My one caution is that it's smaller and has less incoming flights per day. That said, if you're flight is delayed or cancelled, it may be a bit more difficult to get here.

Entry Requirements

  • Visa: U.S., Canadian, and UK travelers do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days.

  • Customs: You’ll need a valid passport and return ticket.

  • Health: No mandatory vaccinations unless traveling from a country with yellow fever risk.

Pro Tip: We recommend checking out Club Mobay or Club Kingston at the Montego Bay airport for fast-track through immigration and access to the airport lounge. Trust me, it's worth it! Reach out and we can provide more details.

For more information on Club Mobay, check out our review: What is Club Mobay and is it Worth It?

Being Sandals enthusiasts, we'll cover some of the best spots to stay below. That said, Sandals includes transportation to and from the airport. You also have the option to book a private luxury transfer!

The Jamaican Landscape

The North Coast

The North Coast of Jamaica is, in my opinion, where you'll find most of the island's gems. Montego Bay is located in the northeast section of the island and is known to have a great nightlife. It also houses the main airport we prefer to fly into. Near Montego Bay you'll also find some unique places to visit, like the Rose Hall Great House.

From Montego Bay, it's only about a 90 minute ride east to Ochos Rios. In my personal opinion, Ochos Rios is the best spot for first-timers to Jamaica. It houses several of the best resorts and Dunn's River Falls is probably the most iconic excursion on the island.

West and South

On the western side of the island, you'll find Negril. This city is famous for it's Seven Mile Beach, which draws crowds each year. Sandals Negril is located right on the beach in this area, and is an incredible choice if you want the experience.

Kingston is found on the southeastern side of Jamaica. If you're in the area, this is a good time to visit the Bob Marley Museum mentioned above.

Top Excursions and Activities in Jamaica

Dunn's River Falls

Dunn’s River Falls

Jamaica offers a diverse range of activities to suit every traveler. Here are some must-do experiences:

  • Relax on the 7-mile beach of Negril.

  • Discover the landscapes of the Blue Mountains.

  • Experience the lively nightlife of Ocho Rios.

  • Visit Port Antonio for unique attractions like rafting the Rio Grande and enjoying the local cuisine at Boston Bay Beach.

If you want the best experience, we always vote going with Island Routes for your excursions. We always advise to stay at Sandals Resorts when in Jamaica and Island Routes is their official partner for excursions. They'll have a kiosk near the front at each resort and will pick you up right in front! Plus, for safety reasons, it's always ideal to go with a trusted vendor for your excursions.

Below, we've listed some our favorite excursions through Island Routes. For more information on which excursions might be best for you, check out our blog: (Coming Soon).

Blue Mountains Coffee Tour

Take a guided tour through the famous Blue Mountains and sample some of the esteemed Blue Mountain coffee.

Water Sports & Adventure

Jamaica offers snorkeling, scuba diving, river rafting, horseback riding, and ziplining for thrill-seekers. Additionally, you can relax and unwind on the beaches of Negril and Montego Bay, known for their long stretches of sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Jamaican Culture & Cuisine: What to Expect

Warm Hospitality & "Irie" Vibes

Jamaicans are known for their friendly, laid-back nature. Embrace the relaxed pace and don’t be shy to greet locals with a “Ya mon” or “Respect.”

One of my favorite things about Jamaica is their concept of "island time." You'll most likely hear this at some point during a visit. Everything moves at a laid-back pace and there's no need to rush. It forces me to slow down and enjoy things.

Must-Try Jamaican Foods

Jerk Chicken

Jamaican Jerk Chicken

  • Jerk Chicken: Spicy, smoky, and flavorful—try it from a roadside jerk stand.

  • Jamaican Patties: A delicious, flaky pastry filled with spicy beef, chicken, or vegetables.

  • Ackee & Saltfish: Jamaica’s national dish, a unique blend of fruit and salted cod.

  • Curry Goat: A flavorful, slow-cooked Caribbean specialty.

  • Rice & Peas: A staple side dish made with coconut-infused beans and rice.

  • Rum Punch & Red Stripe Beer: No trip is complete without trying these iconic Jamaican drinks.

Foodie Tip - If you're limited to trying a few things during your stay, definitely try the Jerk Chicken and the Jamaican Patties. I've not tasted Jerk Chicken anywhere else that was as good as they make it on the island. On my first trip to Jamaica, I discovered the Jamaican Patty and ended up looking for them everywhere I went! These are two that are definitely unique to Jamaica.

For authentic dining, visit Scotchies (jerk meats) or Miss T’s Kitchen (Ocho Rios).

Where to Stay in Jamaica: The Sandals and Beaches Experience

If you are looking for the best place to stay in Jamaica, it's always hands-down going to be Sandals Resorts or Beaches Resorts. The Sandals brand started in Jamaica and has now expanded to seven resorts across the country. Beaches has two resorts, located in Ochos Rios and Negril.

The sister brands offer the most perks and amenities for an all-inclusive getaway. The Sandals properties are couples-only and geared towards adults and honeymooners. Beaches boasts the same level of service and amenities, but is geared towards families and welcomes all ages.

Practical Travel Tips for a Smooth Trip

Currency & Payment

  • Jamaican Dollar (JMD) is the official currency, but USD is widely accepted.

  • Carry small bills for tips and taxis.

Getting Around

  • Taxis: Use licensed JUTA taxis or arrange a driver through your hotel.

  • Shuttles: Most resorts offer complimentary shuttle services.

  • Rental Cars: Drive on the left side, but be cautious—roads can be challenging.

Note on Transportation - As I've shared earlier, we always stay at Sandals or Beaches. You'll have free transportation to and from the airport. Additionally, their vendor includes transportation for excursions. I personally recommend sticking with these for the safest option.

Safety Tips

  • Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas.

  • Use resort safes for valuables.

  • Politely decline street vendors if uninterested.

Packing Essentials

  • Light clothing, swimsuits, sandals, and water shoes for waterfall hikes.

  • Sunscreen, insect repellent, and a waterproof phone pouch.

  • Travel adapter (Jamaica uses 110V, same as the U.S.).

Money-Saving Tips

Traveling the North Coast doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some tips to help you save money while enjoying all that this beautiful region has to offer:

  • Hotel and Flight Deals: Look for packages that include both accommodations and flights. These deals often provide significant savings compared to booking separately.

  • Shoulder Season: Consider visiting during the shoulder season (April to July). During this time, prices are lower, and the crowds are smaller, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

  • Local Dining: If you venture off the resort for food, eat at local restaurants and try traditional Jamaican cuisine. Not only is it more authentic, but it’s also usually cheaper than dining at touristy spots.

  • Markets and Shops: Visit local markets and shops for unique souvenirs and gifts. You’ll find a variety of items at affordable prices, and it’s a great way to support local artisans.

Safety and Precautions

Jamaica is generally a safe destination, but as with any travel, it’s always important to take some precautions to ensure your safety.

Travel Advice

  • Stay Aware: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and tourist hotspots. Keep an eye on your belongings and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

  • Night Travel: Avoid traveling alone at night, particularly in rural areas. Stick to well-lit, populated places and use reputable transportation.

  • Health Precautions: Be mindful of your health by taking necessary precautions against sunburn, heat exhaustion, and other tropical illnesses. Always use sunscreen, insect repellent, and stay hydrated.

  • Local Customs: Respect local customs and traditions, especially when visiting rural areas or attending cultural events. A little respect goes a long way in ensuring a positive experience.

  • Preparedness: Be prepared for occasional power outages and internet disruptions, especially in rural areas. Make sure to bring a portable charger for your phone.

  • Language: Learning some basic Jamaican Patois phrases can help you communicate with locals and enhance your experience. Simple greetings and expressions of gratitude are always appreciated.

  • Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance, which can provide coverage in case of unexpected medical or travel-related expenses.

Jamaica honestly offers so much to experience. We've been several times and there's still so much more to go back and do. Whether you’re climbing waterfalls, sipping a cocktail on the beach, or dancing to reggae beats, every moment on this island is unforgettable.
